چکیده

This study examined how talker accentedness affects the recognition of noise-vocoded speech by native English listeners and contextual information interplays with during this process. The included 20 English-speaking, normal-hearing adults aged between 19 23 years old. stimuli were Hearing in Noise Test (HINT) Revised Speech Perception (R-SPIN) sentences produced four Mandarin talkers (two males two females) who learned as a second language. Two (one each sex) had mild foreign accent other moderate accent. A six-channel noise vocoder was used to process stimulus sentences. vocoder-processed unprocessed presented listeners. results revealed that talkers’ accents introduced additional detrimental effects besides spectral degradation negative effect exacerbated became stronger. While provided beneficial role recognizing mildly accented vocoded speech, magnitude benefit decreased increased. These findings joint influence variability sentence context on perception degraded speech.

Stacked transformations for foreign accented speech recognition

Nowadays, large vocabulary speech recognizers exist that are performing reasonably well for specific conditions and environments. When the conditions change however, performance degrades quickly. For example, when the person to be recognized has a foreign accent the conditions could mismatch with the model, resulting in high error rates. The problem in recognizing foreign accented speech is the...

Foreign-accented speaker-independent speech recognition

This research investigated whether acoustic-phonetic knowledge of the mother tongue of a non-native speaker can be used to adapt an existing target language phoneme HMM recognizer. For this purpose three sets of phoneme HMMs were generated, one representing the target language (German), one the mother tongue of the non-native speaker (Turkish), and the third the foreign-accented pronunciation o...

Automatic accent classification of foreign accented australian English speech

English speech based on accent dependent parallel phoneme recognition (PPR) has been developed. The classifier is designed to process continuous speech and to discriminate between native Australian English (AuE) speakers and two migrant speaker groups with foreign accents, whose first languages are Lebanese Arabic (LA) and South Vietnamese (SV). The training of the system can be automated and i...

Computational Modelling of the Recognition of Foreign-Accented Speech

In foreign-accented speech, pronunciation typically deviates from the canonical form to some degree. For native listeners, it has been shown that word recognition is more difficult for strongly-accented words than for less strongly-accented words. Furthermore recognition of strongly-accented words becomes easier with additional exposure to the foreign accent. In this paper, listeners’ behaviour...

The recognition of Japanese-accented and unaccented English words by Japanese listeners

This study investigated whether Japanese listeners learning English employ two types of lexical information (word frequency and neighborhood density) when they recognize English words. English words recorded by a native speaker of English and a native speaker of Japanese were presented to Japanese university students in a noise condition. The results of word recognition scores showed that Japan...
